Who better to ask what the concept of home means than children? Genworth Canada, in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity, is asking students in grades 4, 5, and 6 to share their stories, videos and poems in the Meaning of Home Contest. The winning student will receive a $50,000 donation towards a Habitat build of their choice, in addition to a $1,000 donation to their school. The story was about a man in Clayton Heights, B.C., who was lobbying the local municipal government to have basement suites deemed illegal and to not allow renters in his neighborhood. His words: “They are only renters.” His complaints were that renters took up too many parking spaces and the local schools were filled to capacity because of these renters. The money, to be used in the building of affordable homes on the Sunshine Coast for families, comes from a new, “$50,000 per door” grant that BC Housing offers to approved affordable-housing projects.
